< Back Just Desserts: The Value of Chocolate by WTA Architecture and Design Studio Kanto.ph 15 July 2025 WTA Architecture and Design Studio unwraps chocolate’s bitter economy at Festival des Architectures Vives 2025 Hello, WTA Architecture and Design Studio ! Félicitations as you’ve brought good news. Thanks to your team, this is the first time a Philippine practice is participating in France’s Festival des Architectures Vives (FAV), an event that transforms historic spaces into experimental architectural experiences. Can you introduce readers to what this festival is about and why it’s a significant platform for architects? What does this moment mean for Philippine architecture on the world stage? WTA Architecture and Design: Our thanks, Kanto ! The festival is held annually in Montpellier, France, and is now in its 19th year. It invites visitors to explore the city’s historic center, where installations are set up in public spaces. A loose comparison in Asia would be the graffiti walk in Penang, Malaysia, where a map guides you to the locations of the artworks, and you decide how to navigate. The festival’s core idea is the juxtaposition of old and new: historic spaces, often not open to the public, filled with contemporary installations from global artists. Some pieces are visually appealing, while others prompt deeper, more critical reflections. Ultimately, the festival’s essence is to raise awareness of architecture in all its forms. So, this year’s festival theme, La Gourmandise , explores indulgence, desire, and consumption. How did your team interpret this theme, and what led you to focus on chocolate as the medium for discussing shifting values, trade inequalities, and consumer responsibility? We initially wanted to relate food and indulgence to a broader, familiar context, especially in the Philippines. What food item is considered a luxury? That led us from candy to chocolate. The brainstorming sessions also brought to mind Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the work of Bompus & Parr, British architects known for their approach to taste. As we dug deeper into chocolate’s history, we found its complex relationship with people and the global demand for it. Yet many of the farmers who grow cocoa live in poverty, disconnected from the luxury end of the chocolate trade. Our concept evolved to address this imbalance, asking the consumer to reflect on how chocolate’s consumption links to sustainability and equitable trade. For the full interview, see here. < Back The Next Chapter Philippine Star 15 July 2020 On a late Monday afternoon in March, a few days prior to the declaration of the community quarantine in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, I boarded an almost empty plane from Cebu to Manila after attending a wedding and a couple of meetings in between. It was only the third month of the year; it was also the 20th flight I would be taking in 2020. Needless to say, I lived a pretty hectic life pre-COVID. If I wasn’t out of town working, I was probably cooped up in the office, burning through the wee hours of the morning. I was in a constant struggle trying to do multiple things at once, yet be present in our projects scattered all over the country. Life moved at a pace so fleeting that when the President announced that a lockdown would be put in place, it was purely unfathomable. Architecture is collaborative, experiential, and tactile; working remotely and apart for extended periods seemed impossible. Observation of a project site’s sight, smell, sound, and touch cannot be recreated virtually. The candor of face-to-face interaction and impromptu discussions make communication helpfully frictionless. Thumbnail-sized colleagues on a screen are a diminished replication of huddles that drive office experience and creativity. How on earth was my team going to survive a fully remote work setup, notwithstanding this country’s unreliably temperamental internet connection? The terminal was proposed to be integrated with the city transport system. Geographically located as the central terminal of Legazpi, the site’s road network accommodates a wide range of transport systems that serve the dense commercial and institutional district. The main bus terminal space is approximately 1,350 square meters, composed of spaces for security check, ticketing booths, waiting area, food kiosks and dining shops, and souvenir shops. Operations of the terminal include various modes of transportation such as buses, jeepneys, AUV’s, taxis, and tricycles - all of which operate 24 hours. The Bicol region is known for its flourishing fish industry and for having the world’s largest fish, the Butanding (whale shark). The use of fishnet and the flowing pattern as the basis for the facade of the proposed Grand Central Terminal will help depict the rich aquaculture of the region. Cladding details reinforce the visual perception of motion. Converging diagonals in the canopy emphasizes the direction to the entrance of the building. Foot traffic from one transport system to another will be minimized through an integrated layout. A patterned walkway serves as wayfinding for both the passengers and the pedestrians, while it also serves as a connection for the bus terminal and city transport terminal on the site.

< Back Junior Interior Designer 2025 San Juan, Manila Full Time The Junior Interior Designer supports the interior design team in conceptualizing, developing, and delivering interior architecture / spatial design projects, from conceptual design phase through to construction documentation and execution. This is an entry-to-early-career position for someone who is eager to learn, contribute creatively, and grow under mentorship. Responsibilities: Assist in the development of interior design concepts (mood boards, sketches, spatial layout, material palettes). Produce drawings, renderings, 3D models, and presentation materials to communicate design intent. Support preparation of technical documentation: detailed drawings, specifications, joinery / millwork details, finishes, FF&E schedules. Conduct research & precedent studies (materials, finishes, lighting, furniture, etc.) to inform design decisions. Assist in sourcing materials, furniture, fixtures, and coordinating with suppliers & vendors. Participate in site visits, surveys, measuring existing conditions, and assisting with construction administration (e.g. site inspections, monitoring quality and design implementation). Collaborate with internal teams (architecture, engineering, consultants) to ensure design integration and coordination.
