< Back The Emergency Quarantine Facilities (EQF) Wins B1M Construction Story of the Year 2021 WTA Architecture and Design Studio 11 November 2021 We are delighted to announce that WTA Architecture and Design Studio has won the B1M Construction Story of the Year 2021 for its Emergency Quarantine Facilities! It has been an opportunity for the team, industry friends and key partners who helped along the way to highlight a powerful part in our industry. Being able to contribute to society in light of our current situation is something that drives the team to continue to innovate, collaborate, and learn from other people. The Emergency Quarantine Facility (EQF) Project, was an initiative to augment and increase the capacity of our hospitals during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and help flatten the curve of the pandemic growth. It consists of a temporary structure design that embodies speed and scalability. The structures were simple and comprised of readily-available materials, which allowed the teams to build them in 5 days. Plans were made open source to allow people from other provinces, islands and countries to access and use the same design. “We learned from the builders, it taught us how much more we can learn from the communities when it comes to designing and building, moving forward,” says William Ti, Principal Architect of WTA Architecture and Design Studio Collaboration played a huge role in the success of these EQFs. WTA, together with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, medical experts, industry partners and sponsors, built more that 3,500 additional beds in the Philippines. “We are proud that we were able to show that architecture and the building industry play a vital role in society. Even in an emergency, shelter is still vital and it shows how we can come up with new ideas quickly, collaborate, and bring everyone together.“ – William Ti In a video by B1M, William explains how fulfilling it is to see something that one builds or thinks about coming to fruition. Guzman | Philippine Information Agency 5 May 2020 PASIG CITY, May 5 (PIA) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Marikina City Government, and WTA Architecture+Design Studio turned over five emergency quarantine facilities (EQF) to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) in Marikina City on Monday, May 4. AFP Inspector General LtGen Ramon Ang Lim together with Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro, AFP Chief Engineer MGen William Ilagan, 51st Engineering Brigade’s BGen Emmanuel Anthony Ramos, and WTA’s Architect William Ti Jr. led the turnover ceremony. The 120-bed capacit y emergency quarantine facilities (EQF) were fu nded by the Marikina City Government and partly by United Architects of the Philippines-Manila Chapter. The AFP’s Office of The Chief Engineer led by MGen William Ilagan and volunteers Danny Ko and Leah Longalong led the construction of the EQFs. Lt. Gen. Designed by WTA, the new City Hall stands as a landmark of civic pride and an embodiment of the values of transparency, accessibility, and service. With Tagaytay’s unique character and natural setting as inspiration, the building integrates thoughtful planning, sustainable strategies, and human-centered spaces that bring citizens closer to their local government. The inauguration ceremony gathered city officials, staff, and community members in a celebration that marked not just the completion of a building, but the beginning of a new chapter for Tagaytay. The new City Hall is envisioned as more than an administrative center—it is a public space where governance and community converge. For WTA, the project is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to nation-building through architecture. By designing civic spaces that prioritize openness and inclusivity, we aim to foster stronger connections between people and their institutions. The terminal was proposed to be integrated with the city transport system. Geographically located as the central terminal of Legazpi, the site’s road network accommodates a wide range of transport systems that serve the dense commercial and institutional district. The main bus terminal space is approximately 1,350 square meters, composed of spaces for security check, ticketing booths, waiting area, food kiosks and dining shops, and souvenir shops. Operations of the terminal include various modes of transportation such as buses, jeepneys, AUV’s, taxis, and tricycles - all of which operate 24 hours. The Bicol region is known for its flourishing fish industry and for having the world’s largest fish, the Butanding (whale shark). The use of fishnet and the flowing pattern as the basis for the facade of the proposed Grand Central Terminal will help depict the rich aquaculture of the region. Cladding details reinforce the visual perception of motion. Converging diagonals in the canopy emphasizes the direction to the entrance of the building. Foot traffic from one transport system to another will be minimized through an integrated layout. A patterned walkway serves as wayfinding for both the passengers and the pedestrians, while it also serves as a connection for the bus terminal and city transport terminal on the site.
