The design aims to provide security and privacy as well as a shade from the strong tropical sun by incorporating vertical operable shutters throughout the home. The façade of the house was designed with operable shutters that creates a well-illuminated entrance and hallway to the bedrooms when open as well as creating a more playful façade when closed. The rear side of the house was designed to maximize the beautiful view of the place. It follows the slope of the site and integrates a tiered garden, which emphasizes the original site contours. Operable shutters were also incorporated in order to provide sufficient shade and privacy when needed. Taking inspiration from the observed natural environment of Caliraya and its playful terrains along with natural creeks that sprawl within its vast lands, the intention was to create a space that blends and harmonizes with its setting, creating a place of belonging with ones surroundings. Similarly, the interiors of the house revolve around mimicking its observed natural environment. Taking inspiration for this, forms are deconstructed and polished for application in the human scale. Natural elements like wood and water add warmth and life while terraneous cleft limestone accents bring the outdoors and earth elements in. The interior dons natural wood as its primary finish to contrast the hard finishes within the house and cool climate of Caliraya. From its exterior, the residence appears to be one unified structure. However, upon entering the main foyer, the distinction between units is made apparent by the common open spaces that weave a connection from home to home. The spaces in the individual homes are all oriented inwards, towards the grand lawn and lap pool, providing a reprieve from the outside world. The families share a garden and a swimming pool, both located in the center of the compound and accessible to everyone. The exterior and the interiors make use of neutral finishes in wood, stone or metal. The interiors’ layout maximizes the use of space while allowing easy movement and flow for people. The project is intended to serve three distinct functions with a social component, a research component, and a program prototype component. The project maps out various public spaces throughout the city that have a high volume of pedestrian traffic. It serves as a redistribution point for old books, allowing the open and free sharing or transfer of ideas from one person to another. It’s mobility allows it to be placed in the most underserved areas and allows it to reach a broader slice of the population. As a research tool, it serves as a data gathering center for the demand for public libraries in various neighborhoods. This allows planners and policy makers to determine where libraries can make the most impact and which communities can utilize them the most. The Book Stop Project is a prototype that determines the role that libraries play in contemporary urban societies and the shape that they may take as society develops and grows. This creates an architecture that creates direct movement and stability of process. The repetition of linear process creates a series of vertical elements that define the volumetric form from exterior to interior. The vertical fins give an interplay between transparency and opacity as well as proper light and ventilation. The gradient colors reflect the complexity of the office space and its identity. The resulting architecture gives spatial experience inside and out.
