The facade, which is influenced by traditional weaves act as a buffer to minimize solar exposure. This Arts and Culture District shall renew the existing institutions in the area by creating a gateway facility and providing complimentary lifestyle spaces as well as opening up the surrounding public grounds. The project seeks to redevelop the urban space of the entire district to rebrand it as an attractive and viable space for leisure and relaxation. The intense mix of the area’s urban population shall be further diversified, creating a more cosmopolitan district where institutional, as well as commercial and transport facilities, converge. This unique urban situation shall allow for greater creativity and increased experiential exposure for the students, government workers, and commuters who pass through the site daily. It shall be an enriching and uplifting experience that allows for a better image of the city. The Chinese gardens are made for reflection and escape from the outside world. They create an idealized miniature landscape, which is meant to express the harmony that should exist between man and nature. A typical Chinese garden is enclosed by walls and includes one or more ponds, rock works, trees and flowers, and an assortment of halls and pavilions within the garden, connected by winding paths and zig-zag galleries. By moving from structure to structure, visitors can view a series of carefully composed scenes, unrolling like a scroll of landscape paintings. The master plan is envisioned as a healthy, sprawling urban oasis. The use of direct and indirect elements from nature throughout its residential, office, hospitality, education, and retail developments are intended to alleviate stress while increasing productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. WTA’s whole vision for the proposed “New Chinatown” is to make its architecture merge with its landscape intention, realizing the perfect balance between the structures and its environment. With an extensive collection, The Book Stop is a network of mobile spaces spread across the city each garnering far more foot traffic than the typical library. In a modern society where no library or bookstore can beat the collection of books that are available online, The Book Stop refrains from trying to reinvent the purpose of libraries. It instead works on rethinking the physical architecture and the distribution system of libraries, emphasizing casual serendipity and ease of access. The project is a pop-up public library network that explores how libraries need to evolve to engage with and attract contemporary users and promote reading in the next generation, as well as galvanize communities by creating community events where people can interact and share ideas. The project is intended to serve three distinct functions with a social component, a research component, and a program prototype component. The project maps out various public spaces throughout the city that have a high volume of pedestrian traffic. It serves as a redistribution point for old books, allowing the open and free sharing or transfer of ideas from one person to another. Its mobility allows it to be placed in the most underserved areas and allows it to reach a broader slice of the population. It moves from neighborhood to neighborhood mapping and responding to local issues and creates a platform for civic discussion and community development. As a research tool, it serves as a data-gathering center for the demand for public libraries in various neighborhoods. This allows planners and policymakers to determine where libraries can make the most impact and which communities can utilize them the most. The Book Stop Project is a prototype that determines the role that libraries play in contemporary urban societies and the shape that they may take as society develops and grows. How have we changed in our interactions with libraries and what sort of network depth and breadth would be ideal for our cities? < Back What Sharing Ground Means in the 2026 Anthology ASEAN Architecture Festival Reyza Ferranco | Rolling Stone PH 9 September 2026 The 2026 Anthology ASEAN Architecture Festival hits Manila this October, trading traditional lectures for raw conversations on culture, AI, and public spaces The construction and design industry in the Philippines has faced relevant scrutiny in recent years over poor infrastructure planning, ghost projects, and chronic urban flooding, which eventually led to bigger political cases. While this backdrop of systemic challenges seems dire, other Filipino architects still envision a better future for the industry and the country, asking how care, culture, and collective futures can shape our communities and the physical spaces that we inhabit. The 2026 Anthology ASEAN Architecture Festival explores this question in this year’s edition of the festival, coinciding with the Philippines’ hosting of the ASEAN Summit. Taking place from October 2 to 4 in Intramuros, Manila, the festival will convene 128 speakers from across Southeast Asia, alongside ten Filipino and ASEAN installations, regional dialogues, and public forums. Intramuros serves both as the festival’s setting as well as its proof of concept for what design can do. “If you look at Intramuros now and what it was 10 years ago, there’s a great difference,” William Ti, festival curator, founder, and principal architect of WTA Architecture and Design Studio told Rolling Stone Philippines. He cited the new museums, pedestrianization of streets in Intramuros, sprucing up of Fort Santiago, and the improved Pasig Esplanade. “My hope really is that by doing the festival in Intramuros, we keep shining a light on it. One of the rarest attractions in Asia is to see something like Intramuros. We have temples everywhere, but Intramuros is very unique in Asia, so I think we should celebrate and push for that more and more,” he added. According to Ti, the festival aims to extend architecture beyond just the construction stage or the anatomy of a building, but also to discuss how to care for and maintain them. “Because that’s what makes it sustainable, by building things that are architecturally best,” he said. The festival also aims to explore dialogue on culture, which includes the everyday rituals and traditions, as well as how their convergence can build a distinct culture that inspires architecture. Meanwhile, discussions on collective future will help architects plan their future and communities, especially with how immersed architecture is in technology and amid the rise of AI. “We have to figure out new ways of how we will build and how our spaces, especially our public spaces, will turn out in this new digital age. So that’s what the collective future is about,” he said. The festival is further committed to the idea that architecture must engage with community, and that buildings only become architecture once they are shared. The Batangas Forest City establishes a link between the mountain and the river. It serves as a connecting element that completes this tropical ecosystem. The forest park creates an incredible natural setting in the center of the city that leads to the appreciation for the beauty and majesty of the mountain. It also traces a path along the river and it’s tributaries that firmly establishes the advantages that encouraged humanity to settle along the banks of our rivers. BATANGUEÑO BFC is a progression of the Batangueño community. It preserves the traditional social units of our compact neighborhoods and in doing so creates definitive communities with their own individual characteristics. These neighborhoods are interspersed not just with urban leisure amenities but also with key components that drive a thriving agro industrial community. By developing technical competence and development centered upon knowledge hubs like an R and D Centers, Logistic Hub or IT Park we are creating the ideal environment for the development of future technologies that can take advantage of the city’s natural setting.
