Despite its modern envelope, the layout remains in tune with its tropical environment. It features an open plan with a high ceiling, catching breezes from the location's fresh provincial air. The expanse of nature surrounding this family home was incorporated into its architecture, retaining the original plot's trees and foliage. This is achieved by assessing the typical behavior of University students: time not in the laboratories or classrooms are largely spent in study areas or libraries. The aim therefore is to reappropriate the library typology by creating a series of interconnected areas which in itself becomes the library. Instead of treating this as a single building, the library sprawls across the campus, also connecting the various departmental buildings via a sheltered roof form. Researching traditional Chinese Medicine, the meridian lines are a non physical system believed to be the channels by which Qi, or energy flows. In relation to the proposal, the flow of knowledge and learning is considered to be the life force of the university. By creating spaces conducive to learning and surrounded by nature, the result is a harmonious setting for social architecture; encouraging students of different departments to inhabit a common social ground. Study spaces of different sizes are distributed along the ‘social meridians’ catering to the type of activity: group project clusters or independent study. The scheme also takes from the traditional Lingnan garden whereby the nodes along the meridian are courtyard-like areas which also function as canteens or activity zones, and the channel connecting all the meridians together is the library. The roof form for the social meridians is taken from the dougong bracket. This ancient Chinese method uses numerous interlocking beams which transfer the load down to vertical members. The proposed structure is undulating and biophilic in nature. For meridians which require shelter, the brackets are then clad in traditional Chinese tile. The Angeles Urban Hub is a one stop vertical neighborhood and business center which provides various programs under one roof. The Urban Hub will be divided into three major zones: the Retail Zone, Office Zone and Residential Zone to anchor the structure’s main activities. The retail areas are raised in level and pushed inward to create an ample public space. There are also buffer zones in between that will serve as an amenity space for both the office and residential areas. Featuring breakout spaces, jogging paths, lounges, function rooms, and a swimming pool for recreational use. To break the mass further, the concept is to introduce courtyards, atriums into the Office and Residential Zones to connect the amenity levels together.Terraced gardens are also introduced in the offices to highlight the mix of urban and rural tones, This in effect makes each of the zones stand alone in itself, creating multiple inner environments while blending in the outer surroundings. It is a 12-hectare superblock located in the center part of the first island. Within Horizon East is a church, a village, an esports arena, offices, dormitory, and an International school. Horizon East embraces a conscious commitment to providing lush green spaces. It fosters the growth and well- being of a holistic and thriving community. The village in Horizon East is surrounded by amenities that define its perimeter. It features 100 villa lots around a transversal community center. Due to its low lying coastal geography and mountainous landscape, the city of Catbalogan is at risk from natural hazards such as landslides, floods, and storms. Additionally, the steadily increasing population has put a strain on resources, property, and the infrastructure. Sky City aims to tackle these issues as it will be built 120 meters above sea level, creating opportunities for development while being naturally sheltered by the mountain ranges. It will be designed to include residential, commercial, and governmental cores that will be powered from renewable sources, and will be planned together with pedestrian and cyclist friendly spaces to reduce transport emissions. SKY CITY HALL The Sky City Hall will be the new city hall in Catbalogan. The project will take up 2 hectares of the 440-hectare Sky City development. It will serve as an expansion from the current city hall with a goal to masterplan and pioneer mountaintop sustainable living as a model for future developments. Locating the main City Hall at a higher terrain will also minimize the risk of floods and encourage the complete expansion of the new city. PROJECT DRIVERS The concept for the Sky City Hall is driven by four objectives. It aims to encourage public participation and transparency by designing spaces that result in heightened interconnectivity between the government and society. It celebrates socio-cultural identity by incorporating cultural symbolism in architectural elements and by encouraging social interactions through public spaces. The city hall seeks to enhance community connections, fostering a sense of belonging by including locals of all skill backgrounds in the creation and development of the new city hall. Lastly, it reflects and responds to local biodiversity by working with the existing terrain and using native species to further mitigate environmental degradation. COMMUNAL CORE Having direct access to communal spaces for everyone to use reflects the government’s priorities in increasing civic trust and public participation.
