Ideally, libraries embody these words’ meaning as the repository of knowledge accessible to all. In collaboration with Museo Pambata, the Book Stop Project and WTA Design Studio propose a mini-library design series that aims to democratize people’s access to knowledge and liberate children’s imagination through the power of reading. The reading corners design takes inspiration from bahay-bahayan, a roleplaying game commonly for Filipino children. Such activity and space for children can liberate their imagination. It also aids in opening young minds to the limitations that their reality imposes. The mini-library consists of related modules that can be used as a whole or independently. This modular design allows for flexible and maximized functionality. Playful use of color creates more inviting and engaging energy to the reading corners. Careful consideration was applied in the dimensions of designing for children’s body size. This maximizes the effectiveness of the design towards its users. Adjacent to the main stairway of a rowhouse, the Gawad Kalinga, QC Reading corner includes a baby shelf tower, bookshelves, and a toy cabinet. Along with an art station, study table, chalkboard door, and a demarcation wall. Two walls flank its east and west side, whilst the north and south side are open. The Sta. Cruz, Manila Reading Corner is located at the Barangay 330 Hall community daycare. Currently, the area functions as a storage space for tables and chairs. The proposed design incorporates a reading nook, bookshelves, and an art station as well as a reading table and storage. The proposed Malate Reading corner is located on the 2nd floor of Barangay Hall 725 in Malate. The design integrates the existing community computer station with reading nooks and bookshelves. The main design inspiration for the mobile library is the sorbetes cart. This pays homage to the logo of Museo Pambata and Filipino’s love for “Sorbetes” or “Dirty Ice Cream”. The design incorporates a collapsible seating area for reading or a quick chat.

More than a frame for the museum’s art prints, it brings to the country a spatial experience of El Museo del Prado through an implied formation of its arches and vaults – walking through the series of the travelling exhibit modules is an interpretation of wandering through the vaulted galleries of El Museo del Prado. Moreover, as it provides shade and visual interest through its sail-like canopies positively reminiscent of familiar umbrellas, it appeals to the sensibilities of the Filipino people. It is elegant yet approachable; fresh yet familiar. It brings the institution closer to the public. The concept of this traveling exhibit takes the basic elements of a museum and creates a module adaptive to the streetscape. Through a modular design that is both visually and functionally derivative of the Museo Nacional del Prado, the project achieves its goal of giving the public access to the museum’s rich collection of art. Included in its program is a transportation terminal for buses, jeepneys, and shuttles, retail commercial center, and a hotel. More than acting as a gateway, Lotus Central Station is designed to smoothen the traffic congestion in the area brought by a lack of systematized loading and unloading bays for public utility vehicles and a hazardous pedestrian environment. To do so, an organized intermodal transit hub composed of multi-level stations is introduced to establish order and create a safer environment for the pedestrians while subtly incorporating retail vehicles, pedestrian, commerce, and the district. Physically, this positive coalescence is embodied in a fluid form. The soft and continuous contour imparts a visual connection with the environment that creates a seamless relationship with the highways and the urban fabric of the area. At its heart is the Provincial Capital Complex. This complex of buildings neighbors two educational facilities with the Bataan Peninsula State University at the North side, and the University IT Town Center at the South. The Provincial Capitol Complex is currently home to an Auditorium and Convention Center, the Capitol Building, the Justice Hall, and a community park. Currently, all of these buildings are not legibly connected other than by road networks, denying locals of a functional and pedestrian-friendly connection. The development is envisioned to be a place where the government meets the people. The current pathways disconnect the two areas of development. By reinvigorating the landscape, our proposal aims to emphasize informal circulations and encourage direct interaction between the provincial government and the Bataeños. The complex aims to be a center where culture, commerce and community come together. Cities are defined by the quality of their public spaces therefore, the multipurpose building - Mediatheque - would be an essential addition to the Barangay, programmed to accommodate the needs of the people, while fostering ties in the neighborhood. The Mediatheque will feature a two-storey library, outdoor and indoor coffee shops, and public assistance offices. The building aims to encourage interaction amongst peers, creating a balance between leisure and work. The project is intended to serve three distinct functions with a social component, a research component, and a program prototype component. The project maps out various public spaces throughout the city that have a high volume of pedestrian traffic. It serves as a redistribution point for old books, allowing the open and free sharing or transfer of ideas from one person to another. It’s mobility allows it to be placed in the most underserved areas and allows it to reach a broader slice of the population. As a research tool, it serves as a data gathering center for the demand for public libraries in various neighborhoods. This allows planners and policy makers to determine where libraries can make the most impact and which communities can utilize them the most. The Book Stop Project is a prototype that determines the role that libraries play in contemporary urban societies and the shape that they may take as society develops and grows.
