< Back Presenting Manileño WTA Architecture and Design Studio 7 January 2021 Manileño is a masterplan that focuses on the people who make up the storied and vibrant communities, from Chinatown to Tondo, from Quiapo to Baclaran, that define Manila and make it the distinct heart of our country. Instead of the usual top-level master plans, It stitches together diverse communities(or barangays) that come together to form a kaleidoscope. Each community is developed around unique public amenities and plazas that allow its residents to develop a shared experience. These unique features are never too far from the next, encouraging not just exploration and interaction, but also making sure that the next community will have its own features that define the boundaries between communities. Shared experiences and defined boundaries strengthen and reinforce communal identity. The main highlight of Horizon Manila is the canal park, a unique and enriching feature that will define the lives of all its residents. The canal park not only connects the 3 islands but also provides Horizon with a public park at its core that stretches all the way to the water’s edge, ensuring that the Manila Bay sunset will always belong to the public. A viaduct with a monorail system allows direct access from Manila to the islands. From the Central Station, the trackless electric tram system loops around the development, and no place on the island will be more than a 5-minute walk away from a tram station. All the roads will be tree-lined and will feature 8m wide sidewalks with 3m arcades that ensures you can walk in the shade or away from the rain anywhere in Horizon. The development emphasizes personal mobility with pedestrian and bike lanes and looks to encourage a car-free lifestyle for most of its residents. Horizon Manila will feature hyper-local public amenities that give residents a diverse mix of programs and activities in each community. These facilities include micro libraries and pop-up galleries and museums, as well as the country’s first e-sports arena. A state-of-the-art basketball arena will be enhanced by basketball parks throughout the islands that reflect the prevalence of streetball in our culture. We see Horizon as the City of Tomorrow. It is envisioned to once again bring development and growth energy back to the City of Manila . Harnessing, polishing and applying textures and characters inspired from the outside environment within the interior spaces creating seamless transitions between two plans of everyday reality of indoors and outdoors. Tropical Loggia is a proposed home design situated in a residential beach community. The design aims to bring the environment indoors by opening up spaces and incorporating natural elements into the interior details. The entrance of the home was designed without a front door to encourage social interaction within the community. Instead, a long hallway welcomes visitors entering the home creating a soft boundary between the outside and inside. The program rethinks how people interact and view the home as a collection of spaces unified when sliding doors are opened up. Social spaces define this residential typology. Each space is thoughtfully designed for privacy, comfort and utility, which can transform into a spacious entertaining space when needed. All key areas were brought to the rear side of the house to allow people to enjoy the view of the lot. The rear side of the house was then opened up further to create more useful spaces and to take advantage of the view of the ocean. Natural elements - its textures and characteristics - were incorporated into the interiors of each space, allowing its users to still enjoy the ambience of its surroundings. Instead of making the chapel highly visible, in order to distinguish a separation from the nearby amusement park, the chapel is instead concealed and sunken with the dense vegetation of the forest. Upon parking, the approach to the chapel follows the four stages of Penance. The intention is a journey from the entry point where one starts as sinful and repentant. Once the users reach the chapel structure itself at the end of the journey, they are to feel cleansed and purified before the mass service. The form of the chapel itself was intended to be pure and simple in shape. The continuous curve’s geometry is informed by numbers taken from the Bible as illustrated above. This commercial mixed-use development espouses a minimalist basic form that enriches the surrounding towers by creating a huge elevated mid-level green square on its deck. With a gross leasable area of 94,000 square meters over an 8,300-square meter prime property, it envelopes a diverse commercial program comprised of offices and retail, events and sports facilities, and an urban park and food exposition in an adaptive volumetric space. The cubic form stands in stark contrast to the existing and future point towers of BGC - adding an iconic character to the structure. This form also maximizes the allowable floor - area ratio to a much lower height and entails huge floor plates that allow flexibility in office and retail planning as well as multiple connections that create a stronger core centrality. This centrality increase activity and maximizes foot traffic by allowing seamless and convenient travel throughout the complex. To make the massive block permeable, an urban valley is created in the base levels. This attracts activities and foot traffic while functioning as the main public space of the building. On all sides of the upper floors, campus deck that serve interactive flexible spaces with various activities create punctures to the facade. A solar well is also integrated to allow filtered and indirect natural light into the structure's core. On top of it is a cooling pond that acts as a wading and reflecting pool of the urban parl. It is bounded by Calero Street which connects the downtown plaza of Balanga with the proposed future city center site along Enrique Garcia Sr. Avenue which connects to the provincial highway. The existing terminal structure is currently one of of not the biggest structure in Balanga. It is a 3-storey structure that dwarfs most of the surrounding properties. Current site conditions show a lack of pedestrian-oriented planning and human scale. This mechanical and alien development has created a kind of termination for Balanga’s northward expansion. Priority is given to vehicular traffic and convenience rather than to passenger safety and comfort. This upended organizing principle coupled with the openness of the surrounding landscape has given rise to a noise-polluted and barely walk-able development. The program calls for the development of an integrated central bus and jeepney terminal for Balanga and Bataan. Together with this terminal, a convention center and commercial retail center is to be developed. A 112-room business hotel will also be developed to support these programs. The business hotel can accommodate large functions and events. This allows the city to tap into the huge MICE tourism market. It also supports transient travelers from the terminal and business guests by providing them with convenient and reliable accommodations in Balanga. The commercial retail center is an activity node that provides people with a destination for shopping. It increases time spent and monetizes the foot traffic from the terminal and convention. In order to attract more people and encourage longer stays , a more engaging street front should be presented along with ample desirable public spaces.

It is located at the heart of Albay’s urban center and aims to become a new green destination that integrates the location’s natural environment into a modern development for the community. The building maximizes its featured natural environment by locating balconies at strategic spots and designing exposed hallways for the podium. A multi-level park at the podium level was inspired by the pos of green nature. Thus, landscaping in various forms were used to hold social spaces into people-friendly zones. The presence of lush greenscapes creates a more enticing atmosphere that invites both resident and non-resident to traverse its covered pathways. Playful textures draw in people and patrons to the building’s retail corridor. By introducing interesting and playful spots, the design creates a people-magnet around the building’s shops. Overlapping levels also allow for easy transfer from floor-to-floor and intuitive wayfinding. Gardens and balconies line the gap between two residential towers. The Legazpi Terrace Park aims to become a new center for the local community. The bridge form was kept as clean as possible to preserve the panoramic view of the surrounding between the two gateways, its horizontality gently manifested thru its geometrical form by avoiding vertical elements, which could disrupt the calming natural atmosphere. The serene atmosphere and lack of intrusiveness have been achieved by sensitive architectural gestures, proposing an intimate yet open and inviting sculptural anchors; obscured by edge of the mountains yet in clear view. With a total length of 700 meters, the bridge includes three 63 meters spans without intermediate supports. Its undulating shape, resulting from landing space constraints, helped preserve the existing views and al- lowed the structure.

With an extensive collection, The Book Stop is a network of mobile spaces spread across the city each garnering far more foot traffic than the typical library. In a modern society where no library or bookstore can beat the collection of books that are available online, The Book Stop refrains from trying to reinvent the purpose of libraries. It instead works on rethinking the physical architecture and the distribution system of libraries, emphasizing casual serendipity and ease of access. The project is a pop-up public library network that explores how libraries need to evolve to engage with and attract contemporary users and promote reading in the next generation, as well as galvanize communities by creating community events where people can interact and share ideas. The project is intended to serve three distinct functions with a social component, a research component, and a program prototype component. The project maps out various public spaces throughout the city that have a high volume of pedestrian traffic. It serves as a redistribution point for old books, allowing the open and free sharing or transfer of ideas from one person to another. Its mobility allows it to be placed in the most underserved areas and allows it to reach a broader slice of the population. It moves from neighborhood to neighborhood mapping and responding to local issues and creates a platform for civic discussion and community development. As a research tool, it serves as a data-gathering center for the demand for public libraries in various neighborhoods. This allows planners and policymakers to determine where libraries can make the most impact and which communities can utilize them the most. The Book Stop Project is a prototype that determines the role that libraries play in contemporary urban societies and the shape that they may take as society develops and grows. How have we changed in our interactions with libraries and what sort of network depth and breadth would be ideal for our cities?
