Due to its low lying coastal geography and mountainous landscape, the city of Catbalogan is at risk from natural hazards such as landslides, floods, and storms. Additionally, the steadily increasing population has put a strain on resources, property, and the infrastructure. Sky City aims to tackle these issues as it will be built 120 meters above sea level, creating opportunities for development while being naturally sheltered by the mountain ranges. It will be designed to include residential, commercial, and governmental cores that will be powered from renewable sources, and will be planned together with pedestrian and cyclist friendly spaces to reduce transport emissions. SKY CITY HALL The Sky City Hall will be the new city hall in Catbalogan. The project will take up 2 hectares of the 440-hectare Sky City development. It will serve as an expansion from the current city hall with a goal to masterplan and pioneer mountaintop sustainable living as a model for future developments. Locating the main City Hall at a higher terrain will also minimize the risk of floods and encourage the complete expansion of the new city. PROJECT DRIVERS The concept for the Sky City Hall is driven by four objectives. It aims to encourage public participation and transparency by designing spaces that result in heightened interconnectivity between the government and society. It celebrates socio-cultural identity by incorporating cultural symbolism in architectural elements and by encouraging social interactions through public spaces. The city hall seeks to enhance community connections, fostering a sense of belonging by including locals of all skill backgrounds in the creation and development of the new city hall. Lastly, it reflects and responds to local biodiversity by working with the existing terrain and using native species to further mitigate environmental degradation. COMMUNAL CORE Having direct access to communal spaces for everyone to use reflects the government’s priorities in increasing civic trust and public participation. The residential blocks will complement the urban redevelopment of Balintawak Cloverleaf area by addressing a need to absorb and house the existing as well as the projected density of the area. In doing so, the program shall also cater to the recreational needs of the residents maximizing the practicality of living amid a bustling city. The commercial strips then support the residential block. However, it also functions as community magnet drawing people in to the development. Thus, contributing to the positive ripple effect outward to the immediate communities. < Back WTA Captures Ani ng Dangal 2023 Award WTA Architecture and Design Studio 6 March 2023 We’re honored to be a recipient of the Ani ng Dangal Award 2023 given by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts yesterday at the Malacañang Palace for our project Batangas Forest City. A big congratulations to the team! The award was given during the 2023 National Arts Months enshrined in Presidential Proclamation No. 683, with the theme, “Ani ng Sining, Bunga NgGaling.” One of the highlights of the festival was the 15th Gawad ng Ani ng Dangal. The ceremony recognized the sterling achievements of Filipino artists who have brought honor to the country by winning the highest achievements in international competitions and events in their respective fields. The Ani ng Dangal or Harvest of Honor is an annual celebration that recognizes homegrown artists who received esteemed international accolades in the categories of Architecture and Allied Arts, Cinema, Dance, Music, Visual Arts, and Broadcast Arts. Each of the twelve luxurious residential flats is housed on its own exclusive and unique floor with a generous area of 258 square meters per unit. The residential floors combined with two storeys of commercial units and another storey for amenities result in a gross floor area of 6,500 square meters. In Twelve Luxury Flats, each unit is programmed to have generous spaces with daylighting and ventilation on all four faces of every unit. At one unit per floor, it offers the luxury of living in an expansive space with unrestricted views. The residential units are planned to cater to a unique setting of both private moments and social gatherings. The plan centers around a living and dining suite bounded by floor to ceiling windows that open up to luxurious veranda. Marcos Stadium is a 12,000 capacity track and field stadium in Laoag City that serves as the primary social space for the people of Ilocos Norte. The stadium is located at the heart of the city adjacent to the Mariano Marcos State University and opposite the Rizal Park. The main feature of the stadium is its open southern end, where an open amphitheatre and sloping lawn leads towards Rizal Park. The open stadium allows for free and unfettered access for everyone and critically expands the existing public open space inside the city by 200%. This allows it to serve not just as a sports and events venue, but also as an extension of the park and a daily destination for both students and residents. The stadium's remarkable urban regeneration shines through its transformation. From its decayed origins and desolate state, the stadium is now a bustling park for sports and leisure, honoring local talents and historical significance. The project catalyzed a renewal, not just of physical structures, but of community vitality. The eastern side that used to be a road now becomes a promenade that connects us with the university where students could freely enter and turns the stadium into part of the campus, the underside of the seats cover warm up tracks that are free for the public's use.On weekdays, students from Mariano Marcos University now gravitate towards it before and after class, while weekends draw families for picnics and leisurely strolls. This illustration shows such spaces can revitalize neighborhoods, acting as bridges connecting urban and rural inhabitants. The minimalist and distinct geometry of an open bowl is defined by the corrugated PVC exterior wall and canopy that reflects the corrugated metal roofs of most local homes. This is carried by clean-cut curving steel columns that bend and narrow into the canopy rafters. The external skin is a celebration of the Ilokano Abel fabric that is considered as an essential part of their life cycle. From birth, infants are wrapped in Abel, in adulthood, they use it in weddings, in death, they use it to wrap the departed ones. The process of making this fabric is passed down from generation to generation and preserves the llokanos' character and identity.
